Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015...

To my wife, sons, mom & dad, in-laws, assorted other family, friends, bill collectors, random folks, zombies, and whatever dregs are left...

Happy New Year!

Here's hoping 2015 is the year for you...or us...or whatever.

Being the "somewhat" cynical person I can be...I've never been real sure why the flip of a calendar page should hold any real significance. But not to rain on anyone's parade, if you want it to...I hope it does for you.

All the best to you and yours.

Now in FABULOUS TECHNICOLOR!!!

Not really, but I've got my flats (colors) laid down! I'll fancy it up when time allows...which will be soon I hope...but it's already coming along MUCH faster than the last Tiki guy I did.

On with the show...

Had a little window of time. Started inking my Tiki guy. Here's another glowing rave for Manga Studio 5/Clip Studio Paint...So far, the absolute closest thing to "real" inking/drawing I've ever used. (and if you screw up...Command "Z"!!!) Super stoked on this stuff. Ok...enough of that.

Oh yeah...

The daily post thing?

Over it.

I can't/won't/don't wanna just put up stuff to put up stuff. That's what it felt like, so nope, not happening anymore. I still plan on posting as regularly as creatively possible. The point being I wanna be putting up work, not just doofus rants and space fillers.

So to the throbbing masses awaiting my every missive...you'll get quality instead of quantity...theoretically at least.

College day...

I took our oldest son to a College day today. Where did the time go? Watching him, and talking with him today, I know he's ready for this and for that my wife and I are proud. We've watched him work hard over the last 11 and a half years. We know he'll continue to do so.

He's not gone yet, and we're not ready for him to be, but the gateway to his next stage of life is approaching soon. We will proudly walk him to that gate, and most certainly be there when we're called upon...but I reckon it's about time to see if the wings work.

I know they'll do just fine.

I'll pass, thanks. Nothing about it looks appealing in any way. I'm certainly not opposed to saving money, but I'm not willing to pay the price to save. I'm much happier sitting at my desk clicking away on the mouse, or as I call it, "Santa's little helper". I'm not a fan of crowds to begin with, maniacal legions of shopaholics even less so. So y'all have fun doing what you do, I'll watch the highlight reel on the nightly news.

How 'bout draft dodging publicity glomming douchebag? His recent comments on the Ferguson ordeal would've been better left unspoken.

Asparagus...

Dang...asparagus is GOOD! Especially if grilled in a little garlic butter...oh man, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I was at a friend's house yesterday literally eating it off the grill (I wasn't bobbing for asparagus, over an open flame...I used my dirty hands, like a normal cretin). So good!

But then...

Seriously, 20 minutes after the first shoot went down my gullet, the Asparagus Aftermath began. Sure, I'd had a couple of nice Pale Ales, which undoubtedly fueled what was about to befall me...but damn, you'd think ANYONE would remember the plague about to strike. But no...I did not. It was time to relieve myself of the liquid weight of the the hops and barley goodness, I waited my turn for the facilities, everything to this point...nothing but good times, good friends, good foods.

My pissoir predecessor steps out, I step in. I take my position at the throne, ready to honor it with the bounty of my harvest. As the golden stream of past libations escape the carefree confines of it's host, suddenly EVIL is afoot. Rather, EVIL is a-nose. I was quickly, and unceremoniously bitch slapped, and horse collared by the all too evil Asparagus Piss Stench from Hell. A smell so bad, you can taste it...and trust me...that's not good. How is this geometrically and/or gastronomically possible? I'm not expert at the inner workings of your normal human, or even me, but it seems next to impossible that one or two shoots of asparagus made it from my mouth hole to my pee hole in such a short amount of time. Even more impossible, that along the route, it was apparently basted in fire, brimstone, and all the remaining effluent of hell itself, and then streamed forth in such a malevolent and malodorous concoction as to stupefy, and completely confound it's own host.

"The devil done jumped out my Jimmy!" I exclaimed.

My knees tried buckling, but I wasn't having it. No greenery is gonna put me down. I persevered, shook, tucked, and zipped. Knowing all too well the other guests had ingested the same evil, I would not be the only embarrassed soul. No, this Succubus would embrace us all tonight.

Thankfully...she was gone by morning.

Middle Age...

So, fuck it, tonight I'm cheating. This is my Saturday post, cause I'm not readily sleepy after midnight on Friday.

Holy Shit!

I must be "Middle-Aged"!!!

Well, that might be the punch line of a really bad joke, but according to World Life Expectancy.com I was middle-aged at a little over 38 years of age. (For you jillions of readers who don't know me, I'm a 49 year old, Caucasian male living in the Glorious State of Texas). So Gawddammit....I'm 11 years past my prime Corvette buying days. Motherfucker! Where's the fucking manual!?! A rule book!?! Something in the Queensberry rules? How's a fucker supposed to know?

So the bad news is that I'm over half-passed dead. Yeah, and that sucks..if you let it. But, fuck, numbers is numbers. Live 'em, or ignore them and roll with it. I dig rolling.

The good news? I absolutely don't feel the need to buy an overpriced four wheeled excuse for my less than Spring Chicken (Game Cock?) manhood.  I also don't need to supplement any perceived lack of lead in my pencil with firearms, nor do I need the middle aged white guy badge of honor of a concealed carry license. I don't hate minorities, immigrants, or gays. (That list was in no particular order in my lack of hatred or political reasoning...it's just the way it got typed out, so get the fuck over it). For the most part, people are WAY too wrapped up in themselves, their lives, their dreams, their delusions, their politics, their religious proclivities, etc. I'm not immune to that, but fuck...lighten the fuck up, and live.

Look around. Smile at someone. Wave. Basic fucking human involvement. I'm not asking for blood giving (though that's not a bad thing either)...just be part of the world around you. Maybe it'll give you something, or maybe you can give it something. Maybe not, but hell....it's gotta be better than another episode of "Dancing With The Stars".

Fuck, it's late...I'm rambling...maybe I'm passed the middle? I can now be the guy that sits on my front porch and waves at traffic! I wonder if I can get my wife to buy matching sweat suit ensembles? The lonely howl of the wolf is hard to ignore....

I'm going to bed now. I do own a Tempurpedic mattress...but at least, for now, it's not one of those Hospital adjustable types...

Have Fun!

(P.S. I said "fuck" more times in this post than probably in the history of my "blog" (I vote now to have that word removed from human involvement...the only possibly more offensive word is "tweet"...Fuck, I'm glad I got that off my chest)

Oh yeah!

So I've been playing with some new, to me, software. Manga Studio 5. I personally don't care for Manga style artwork, so while I've known of the software for a while...I avoided it for that reason. But guess what? Sometimes, if you dump your prejudices...you just might learn something. After years of using Adobe's Illustrator & Photoshop I couldn't see how anything could top either of them. Well, I was wrong. Joining my Wacom tablet and Manga Studio 5 is the closest thing to "real" drawing I've come on a computer. It just feels right. I've just started using it, but having a slightly better than working knowledge of the aforementioned Adobe products definitely brings the learning curve down. Ok, enough gushing fan boy talk from me. Here's the first doodle I've squeezed out with the new combo...DEFINITELY more to come...

Lightning strikes twice...

So I get a text this morning before I'm officially out of bed. See, the groms had just left for school...so I figured someone was texting to remind me of some parental thing I needed to do. Kinda weird when your kids are more responsible than you...but I figure we raised em, so we must've done something right.

But upon checking I discover I couldn't be further from reality. A buddy texted me to see if I'd perform a wedding for he and his fiancé. (Backstory: In the early daze of the interwebs I became officially ordained as a Minister of the Universal Life Church of Modesto, California...and no sh*t, I can perform legal marriages in the State of Texas. If you knew me at all you'd be suffering a cerebral hemorrhage right about now). A year or so ago I'd done my first and only wedding for our mutual friend...and he decided he wanted the same thing. Wow! That's about a left field kinda first thing text of the morning if there ever was one.

I respond, and he lets me know what they want, and it certainly fits within my parameters of both non-religious and crowd avoidance. So I said I'd be honored to do the deal. So come mid December I will have married 2 couples. Kinda crazy, but kinda cool in a really weird way too.

Cats...

In all honesty, I married into being a cat person. Before I was married, I'd been around maybe 2 cats. When my wife and I started dating she had a cat, Amber, who became my stepcat after we were married. There was never any doubt where Amber's affection lay...I was tolerated, but only begrudgingly so. Roscoe, so named because I told my wife the only way we could keep him was if we named him "Roscoe", came into our lives a couple years after marriage. He was a good guy. Both are now gone, and both missed.

Sandy came after Amber passed. She's 13 now. Bucky came after we lost Roscoe. He's 6 now. Crazy how attached I've become to them both. Truthfully though, Sandy only tolerates me...she's a mama's girl too. I reckon I'm writing this because me and Bucky just shared some quality time on the couch while watching the Cowboy's game.

Reckon I'll head back to the couch now and see if my buddy wants to join me.

An idea to save us from ourselves...

My proposal is this:
Door Locks controlled by mirrors. If the mirror didn't like what it saw, you wouldn't be allowed out of your house. Please understand, I fully acknowledge none of us are perfect, myself included (I know that comes as a shock.). I think it's obvious we can all make better choices before venturing out amongst civilized folks. My idea would protect us from ourselves. I'm no rocket surgeon, smarter people than me would have to hunker down hard to come up with the technology that would make this pie in the sky dream a reality. Make no mistake though...it would be a culture changing event on par with all that important shit you learned about in Junior High and forgot.

It would certainly prevent tragedies like this:

Happy Birthday to me...

Well, not really...not yet anyway.

I scored a new pair of Five.Ten mountain bike shoes from the Mrs. early. Took a road ride in em the other day, comfy and efficient...but road rides aren't any fun (better than no rides, but just barely). So this morning I had time to head to the trail...I'm a happy camper. You can read all the marketing crap on their site, and other bike related sites...but dang, they work! They stick to my platform pedals as good as a clipless pedal set up, you're really locked in, but with the peace of mind you can take your foot off easily for a dab or two. The sole is stiffer too, closer to a traditional cycling shoe, so power transfer is optimal. If you're into this sort of thing...go getcha some. They work as promised.

Fun was had...

Why Apple, why?

I'm an admitted Apple fan boy. I've been with them since the early 90s. I've staunchly defended them over the years, the lean through the fat.

Now I'm a bit bent.

I recently downloaded and installed Apple's newest OS, Yosemite, on my 21.5" 2011 iMac. All was peachy at first, not a big fan of the "look" but I was getting used to it. Friday night this began to change. I started having problems connecting to the internet, either wouldn't connect, or was molasses slow. At first I thought it was the AT&T Uverse router...haven't had the best luck with that...but every other device (4 iPhones, 2 iPads, and older Mac Pro desktop, Xbox One, Dish Network boxes etc.) was working fine. I got onto the Apple Community Support forums, started finding lots of folks having WiFi issues once installing Yosemite. But here's the rub...my iMac connects to the router via ethernet. Didn't find any other issues online about it, submitted a help question to the community...now I wait.

If there's no fix, I will attempt to reinstall the previous OS, Mavericks, via a boot disk thumbdrive and restore from a Time Machine backup. Hopefully this will be easy enough...but it never is.

Why Apple, why? Why release a product before all the wrinkles are ironed out? You're giving Yosemite away, you wouldn't have lost money from sitting on it a little longer would you? Reading through the support forums, there's plenty of disgruntled folks out there.

Please, don't become so fat you can't see the foundation on which you stand.

Happiness comes on 2 wheels...

© 2014 Mike Moore Studios
Oh, I fully acknowledge happiness comes in a myriad of other ways as well, but for me one of the fastest ways there is on 2 wheels. This is especially true if the 2 wheels are rolling off road, through some dirt, over rocks and roots. There's something about mating one of man's simpler machines to mother nature's curves that sends me to a state of nirvana. The dirt and debris of daily life gets left behind on the trail. Every brushing slap of a tree, or drop off a ledge knocks away more. Maybe I just get an endorphin high, I'm good with that...but there's more to it as well. If you know, you know...if you don't, I'm not sure I have the linguistic skills to put it convincingly into words...you'll just have to trust my goofy grin.
© 2014 Mike Moore Studios
Some of the dirt sticks to the bike too. That's ok...the bike doesn't mind having a hose taken to it, whereas it would probably just piss me off...then I'd need to go ride again.

Not that that's a bad thing.

I hate to be cynical...

Ok, that's not true at all...I pretty much thrive on it.

But enough about that.

I'm currently ass planted in a high school stadium. I'm being a good parent, waiting patiently for our event to begin. Oh wait, what's that? They decide to start pumping music through the P.A. First song? Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll". You know Gary right? The child molester? Yeah, that one. Who programs this stuff? Second song? Guns and Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle". Multiple references to getting high in that one, amongst other bits of not necessarily "family activity". I'm loving it. The best yet may be Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days"...a song about washed up High School A-Listers. I very nearly laughed out loud over that. (I vehemently refuse to ever "lol").

Please, gentle reader, don't get me wrong, I'm far from any sort of advocate for censorship of any kind...but geez, I reckon the times have changed. Well that, or maybe someone's having a good laugh about this. I'm a huge fan of that sort of subversive mischief, so I'm hoping that's what's up. I'd hate to think there's just stupid people running schools.

Played around with some more digi-doodlin'. Getting more comfortable with it. Just need to keep noodlin' with the doodlin' and things will go the way they're supposed to I reckon...

Old dog...new trick

I've been trying to figure out "digital inking". Basically digital inking is the digital approximation of a pen and ink type drawing. Previously I had hand inked, on paper, then scanned the "finished" drawing into the Mac and cleaned it up, colored it, etc. I had mainly done this using Adobe Photoshop. My new goal is to learn this using Adobe Illustrator. Long story short and with minimal techno babble, Illustrator is Vector based...Photoshop is Pixel based. Vector artwork can be sized infinitely with no resolution issues. Both are excellent  programs, and offer amazingly deep digital toolboxes for "artists", they just do it differently. Not too nerdy was it?

So anyway...I want to learn this for a different look/feel to some of my work. Doing it by hand will never go away...but doing it digitally definitely has some merits I want to explore.

Here's the first effort...

It's not a life changer...but it's a nice enough first step.

Dear Random Person...

If you don't know me, please don't feel free to call me any of the following...

Bro

Boss

Chief

Brother

Holmes

Capn'

Guy

Etc.

My friends don't call me these things. I understand that it's a casual form of male bonding, or maybe friendly assurance you're not a psycho axe murderer, either way...please refrain.

Thank you.

Dang...I kinda sound like a dick. Please don't call me that either though.

Skateboards...

Damn I love em.

Don't ride em as much as I used to, sadly...hardly at all any more.

Why? Honestly...I'm scared. I had a really good slam about a year ago now, nothing broke, I walked away from it with nothing more than severely mangled pride and confidence. I'm 48, which is no big deal in the "real" world, as I have friends that are as old or older and still skating hard...but that slam was unlike any I'd had in nearly 40 years of skating. This was the first one that said,"Hey...you aren't bulletproof anymore, this shit's for real now." I was skating a ditch at the time, by myself as usual. Not really sure what happened, I think probably wheel bite...but there was no tell-tale rub burn, so who knows. Long story short, I fell as hard and as fast as possible for a person of my skill sets to fall from the top of the ditch wall to the flat. There's probably some sort of mathematical formula that could calculate the g-forces etc. experienced by my 200lbs impacting on my beloved concrete, but all I know is it hurt...BAD.

I actually lay there a while in the bottom of that drainage ditch without moving, not so much because I was hurt (I knew nothing was broken), but because I knew I had lost something. Confidence? Stoke? My youth? All of them? I don't know. What I do know is at this point...a year down the road...is that it PISSES ME OFF. I will not go gently into that good night. Screw that. Trust me, I was never, and will never be an "A" list ripper...but I love it and it hurts that it's not there. I want skateboarding back in my life.

To my skate friends...I'm sorry I dropped the torch. Let's skate.

So...

I haven't updated/posted/blogged/vomited personal information in a while...sorry. I hope the 3 of you that read this have been secure enough in your own lives, that the lack of updates on mine hasn't thrown you asunder. I'm good, great even. Busy as always, but still upright and smiling.
I pledge to get back here and contribute...but just not right now.

Good Friday?

Good Friday? Really? I mean I get the commemoration of "dying for our sins"...but still...there's something sorta twisted about celebrating a crucifixion.

Have a Blessed Day...

Whenever I get this reply to a "Thank You" of my own...I'm torn. Do I just mutter another "thank you" and hope that no further exchange is required, or do I reply..."Well I'd like to but unfortunately I'm mired with pious sheeple, not unlike yourself, so unfortunately it appears I'll be doomed to an eternity of snappy, saccharine, Hallmarkish well wishes such as this...but, thank you."

I may be an sacrilegious ass. But I do manage to maintain good manners.

Roadrunner Don't Play...

The Coyote's stash of Acme Weapons of Mass destruction, at the end, weren't enough. Win to the Roadrunner...

A word on the Grammys...

After watching a bit of Grammys tonight, I've come to this completely non-scientific opinion...If there's a dance routine involved with your song...YOU SUCK.

Thursday Doodle, "Skelly"...

I wanted to do some doodling today. I wanted to come up with some sorta new character.

As blue line hit paper this is what was left...

A Skeleton Superhero type guy came about. Cool enough...just doodling. He got inked up and scanned into the compubox...

Cleaned him up, nicknamed him "Skelly" (don't know why and it probably won't stick if this guy gets developed any further), and threw some Photoshop coloring on him.

Decided to keep pushing it a little more...

Had fun with it. May push this character idea and try the Illustrator type rendering I've been playing with lately. Dunno.
